I love a good road trip. It's
a great way to get off the beaten path and see all the corners of this world -
all that nature has to share and all the ways people around the world find to
create and innovate. Both are a constant source of inspiration to me.
"Let's just see" is the foundational phrase of every great
adventure. "Let's just see" what is over the hill, in that
town, around the corner, down that road, where it leads, down that path, what
it tastes like, if they'll let us in...Let's see if we can make it...Let's just
see.
In the same way, creating art is to
me a never-ending grand adventure. Color and technique are what drive me
artistically. The interplay of colors to create a mood or communicate a
moment and the use of brushstroke or other techniques to create striking
effects - the possibilities are endless and fill my head with far more ideas
than I have lifetime to create. I have captured some of those ideas on
canvas, and share them here with you.
I've always been interested in
various art forms and particularly enjoyed drawing as a foundation for the art
I create today. When I was young, my Mom signed me up for drawing and pen
and ink classes at the local art center. That led to my studies in studio
art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison followed by a 17-year career at the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra where my exploration of various art forms and
concepts continued to blossom. During this time, I worked primarily in pastel
art and, surrounded by colleagues who were fellow art lovers and creators, we
sometimes traded our art amongst ourselves.
My husband and I share with our
children the value of the varied art experience. From a children's opera
at the Salzburg Music Festival to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to all the
amazing roadside art we've seen on our road trips across the Midwest and
Western states to a Chuckwagon dinner in Hill City, South Dakota. We've brought
our children to SOHO art galleries and left our spray-painted mark at Cadillac
Ranch. Our children, in turn, have exposed us to a whole new world of
digital art. What an unending flurry of creativity we have in our
world!
I've been influenced over the years
by many people and artistic interests from Botticelli to Frank Bowling, Goth
music to Classical, urban settings to remote regions. By far, my greatest
inspiration derives from the vast array of people I have encountered while
traveling and exploring...people who have created in order to lift others and
open minds - the world-class festivals, the extraordinary chocolate shops in
remote towns, people sharing their woven arts, their food arts, their ancient
arts, their native arts, their wild ideas and their sincere desire to try something
new or honor the work of those before us and share it with all of us. I'm
inspired by that exuberance.
